I recently had the opportunity to present my PowerPoint on restoration ecology and give a reading and book signing of Shadowshine: An Animal Adventure at the Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge. So Shadowshine is now on sale in the Refuge gift shop. I consider it an honor to have my animal characters make a home in a National Wildlife Refuge. Think of it—the forest-folk are now under the full protection of the United States government. (OK, maybe I’m stretching it a bit, but I love the concept).
Black Bayou Lake NWR is a particularly special gem of our treasured National Wildlife Refuge System. Located just outside of Monroe, Louisiana, this refuge beauty supports an astounding diversity of plant and animal species within a boundary encompassing over 5300 acres of lake and swampland.
Considered an “urban” refuge, Black Bayou Lake NWR enjoys powerful support from members of the community, particularly its Friends of Black Bayou Lake National Wildlife Refuge (FoBBLNWR), a beautiful group of generous, hardworking conservation-minded heroes that I’m proud to join.

I hope more people will pile on to this important cause. Black Bayou Lake NWR belongs to us. Let’s treat it like a member of the family.

Rescuing Biodiversity (publishing in June 2023) tells the story of Johnny's attempts at Wafer Creek Ranch to preserve a vanishing Louisiana ecosystem and restore the animal and plant species that once lived there.

“An avowed student of life and restoration ecology, Johnny Armstrong expertly teaches us how to restore an imperiled southern ecosystem based on deep research, firsthand experience, and delighted observation of the species that return to his beloved Wafer Creek Ranch. Driving his devotion is the alarming truth that loss of biodiversity poses a threat on par with climate change and his impassioned belief that society can alter that trajectory, one acre at a time.”

“Up there on your bookshelf between Tolkien and Watership Down is where this book belongs.  As an anthropomorphic adventure that winds through the realm of animals possessing courage, savagery, perseverance, and ultimately wisdom in the face of mounting evil threats – humans disconnected from the natural world – the tale is relevant, if not necessary.”
